Healthy Gums

The purpose of professional cleanings is to restore and maintain optimum gingival (gum) health. To achieve this, the hard and soft deposits that accumulate at and under the gum line are removed. Healthy gums are critically important to the function of teeth. Unhealthy gums lead to infection and disease, loose and poorly functioning teeth, and ultimately tooth loss. Gum disease is the most common disease known to man, occurring in 37% of the population, and studies have shown links between gum disease and systemic disease and premature births. This means that more than 1/3 of the adults in Victoria suffer from this disease, requiring hygiene therapy every three months. Our dental hygienists will custom tailor dental cleanings to suit your needs and to help you maintain optimum oral health.

Being aware and ever vigilant of health risks and the potential for cross contamination is critically important in a dental office. To ensure your safety, we wear masks and non-latex gloves during treatment, and we employ state-of-the-art sterilization procedures, monitored weekly in our office.

Fluoride

The use of fluoride is important in tooth decay prevention. Fluoride is most effective in its topical application which explains the life long benefits of water fluoridation. Topical delivery of fluoride occurs whenever teeth are bathed in amounts of fluoride, usually applied following your professional teeth cleaning. For children at risk, we recommend the use of ingestible fluoride supplements. Risk assessment is based on family history, tooth anatomy, diet, and oral hygiene habits
