ORAL CANCER SCREENING
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, only 50% of those diagnosed with oral cancer survive 5 years following diagnosis. Many of these survivors were diagnosed early, which is why it’s important to get oral cancer screening regularly.
Symptoms of Oral Cancer
Oral cancer screening should be done during each routine visit however, if you have any of the following signs and symptoms that do not go away after more than 2 weeks, please notify your doctor right away:
- A mouth sore
- White or red patches in the mouth
- Pain, numbness or tenderness in the lips or anywhere in the mouth
- A lump or crust
- Difficulty speaking, swallowing or chewing
- Pain or difficulty moving the jaw or tongue
What Happens During Oral Cancer Screening?
Dr. Sims will carefully evaluate your throat and mouth to check for lesions and other signs of oral cancer. Dr. Sims will also feel for lumps and abnormalities in the neck and jaw.
