Crowns and Bridges

There are several cosmetic dental solutions available for patients who are not entirely satisfied with their smile. Among the most popular procedures for improving the appearance and function of teeth are crowns and bridges. These are fixed prosthetic devices placed over teeth or dental implants to protect or replace them.

Dental Crowns

Crowns can be made of porcelain, resin, alloy or gold. A dental crown is designed to mimic your actual teeth in terms of color, shape and size. Alloys are stronger than porcelain, and are best for the back teeth. Porcelain, on the other hand, has a high aesthetic value and is often used for anterior teeth.

Dental crowns are recommended for:

  • Weak or broken teeth
  • Very large cavity where little tooth structure remains
  • Post-root canal therapy to cap the tooth
  • Affix a functional bridge
  • Dental implants
  • Severely stained or oddly shaped tooth

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are recommended to restore functional balance and prevent bite alignment issues, TMJ disorder and gum disease which can occur when a person has one or more missing teeth.

A dental bridge is an effective solution for covering gaps where at least 1 tooth is missing. It is permanently cemented to existing teeth or implant posts which surround the empty space.

What to Expect

Crown and bridge procedures require two appointments. At the first visit Dr. Sims will shape the tooth (or teeth), take an impression, and fit you with an acrylic temporary crown or bridge. At the second visit Dr. Sims will simply trade the temporary crown or bridge with the permanent.
