TOOTH EXTRACTIONS
To be clear, extracting teeth is something Dr. Sims sees as a last resort. But sometimes due to extensive decay, acute gum disease, or impaction (e.g. Wisdom teeth), extraction is the most practical option. Most extractions are able to be done at our office under local anesthetic (and possibly nitrous oxide). If the extraction appears to be very complicated, Dr. Sims will refer the patient to an oral surgeon for the tooth (teeth) removal.
Depending on the individual extraction, Dr. Sims may prescribe the appropriate antibiotic and analgesic.
The Procedure
Once local anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Sims will use forceps to gently remove the tooth. After it has been extracted, the opening is then stitched and gauze is applied to stop the bleeding. If the tooth has broken off or impacted below the gum line, surgery will be needed. The tissue is removed and the tooth is cut from its socket.
